5 Warning Signs that Your Loved One Needs Assisted Living

It can be hard to know when it’s time to introduce your loved one to a nursing home or assisted living facility. Here are some warning signs to look out for:

  1. You’re constantly worrying about them. If you struggle to leave your aging family member without worrying, it might be time to consider assisted living. Worrying constantly isn’t healthy for you. If you are always on edge and nervous about that person falling or struggling to complete daily tasks alone, don’t be afraid to reach out for help.
  2. The care needs are beyond your abilities. Dedicating time to help your aging parents is a wonderful act of kindness. You should be proud that you’ve been able to help them so much. However, there does come a point where you’re in over your head. It’s perfectly okay to research long-term nursing care facilities.
  3. Family and friends are concerned. Your family and friends love you and your parents. They want what’s best. If you’re hearing from many of them about concerns for your parents’ safety and overall wellness, it’s likely time to consider assisted living.
  4. There’s a surgery planned. For example, if you have recently planned a hip or knee replacement surgery for your parent, you should seriously consider long-term nursing care. An assisted living facility will offer post-op care and physical therapy from certified professionals.
  5. The loved one has wandered. Typically, this happens with those suffering from dementia. If your loved one wanders outside and gets lost without any way to contact you, that can be terrifying. Prevent this from happening again by setting you parent up with a long-term assisted living facility.
