September is the start of fall and as the days grow shorter and the weather get colder, the need to stay healthy stays the same! We’ve had an unprecedented year for health concerns, so you are probably very aware of keeping safe. We want to give you a few tips on staying healthy during the cold weather months.
- Wash. Your. Hands. You have heard this over and over again this year with the COVID-19 pandemic remaining such a major concern. But it’s great advice. Washing your hands is the single most effective thing you can do to keep yourself healthy and keep from spreading your own germs. The CDC reports that hand washing education reduces respiratory illnesses, like colds, in the general population by 16-21 percent.
- Get enough sleep. How are you doing on sleeping? Interestingly, older adults need about the same amount of sleep as their younger counterparts—seven to nine hours each night. The bad news is most of us don’t get the sleep we need, mostly because it can be hard to fall asleep. Have a relaxing routine that gets your body prepared for sleeping. Turn off the TV and other electronic devices at least 30 minutes before bed.
- Get your flu shot. The flu shot is already available at doctors’ offices and drug stores, so go out and get it now! You’ll be better prepared when the height of flu season hits. This is particularly true for the elderly, who are more likely to struggle with serious complications from the flu.
